Part Six: Resolutions
Epilogue: The Fine Print
Oliver walks into the Daily Planet building and heads for
“Would it kill you to pick up an iron, Smallville? How do you expect to become an actual reporter if you don’t dress for success? First it was flannel, and now, the ugliest suits I’ve ever seen. Maybe I should take you shopping, because God knows, you’ll never get a date looking like that, and I worry about you ending up alone,
He knows he shouldn’t. He really shouldn’t. Not least because Lois is not a bad person; she’s just tactless and enjoys insulting
He walks up to
When Oliver pulls back,
“Hey,
“Actually,”
Oliver has to laugh. It would be a nice touch for the show they’re putting on, except that somehow, Oliver thinks
“Sure. I have an errand to run after work, but I can come over after that.”
“Then it’s a date. I’ll be waiting,” he adds, while he cops a quick feel of
Then he walks away and thinks about all the things he wants to do to
* * *
“Superman.”
“Don’t start, Batman. I came here for a reason. I need to ask you a favour.”
“What makes you think I’m going to do you this favour?”
“Damn it, Batman. Take the damned thing. I need to know you have it, in case something happens and you have to--” He stops, because he isn’t quite sure how to say this without sounding as if he’s crazy or desperate. “I need to know that if I ever get out of control or someone tries to manipulate me, that you have the means to stop me.”
Batman looks intrigued, and
“And this box gives me the means to restrain you?”
“Well, it’s not like it’s a harness and whip, but essentially, yes.” And then he blushes, because even though the Bat-costume does make him think things like that, on occasion, this really isn’t the time to be wondering what Batman does to relieve all that tension he never quite seems to lose.
“Then what is it?”
“Don’t open it, here, please. It’s a piece of refined kryptonite. One this size could knock me out for days and if you used a little imagination, you could probably even kill me with it. Or at least permanently incapacitate me.”
Now Batman looks shocked, and
“Why are you giving it to me? What about Oliver?”
Well, Oliver had warned him that Batman had figured out how things stood between them. “Because Oliver won’t use it. He won’t hurt me like that, even if it’s necessary. And I need to know that if something happens and I start to do things I shouldn’t, start to hurt people or try to take over the universe or something, that there’s someone who can and will stop me.”
“And you think I’ll be that person.”
“I know you will be. You still don’t entirely trust me, which, in this case, is a good thing. I can count on you to take me out if that’s what you need to do, but I also know that you won’t use what’s in this box recklessly or maliciously.”
Batman is silent for a moment, and then he reaches out his right hand to accept the box and the responsibility that goes along with it.
“Thank you,”
“
Bruce Wayne.
Well. That is unexpected. The dissipated playboy is actually a grim vigilante with a fetish for bats. Although the more
“Thank you, Bruce,” he says quietly. “That means a lot.”
Batman nods stiffly in acknowledgment. “You’re welcome. Clark.”
“Now there’s somewhere I have to be, so I’ll see you at the next League meeting.”
Batman steps back, and
Oliver is waiting for him when he gets in, and Oliver Queen naked and waiting is a beautiful sight. “Lois called,” he says with a grin.
“She says she needs your help with the article about Superman’s showdown with Lex Luthor, but I told her that she knew we had plans, and she could do her own grunt work tonight while you and I do ours.”
“Her obsession with Superman is kind of creepy. She tries to grope me—well, Superman—every time I save her, and she doesn’t seem to realize my eyes are above my belt.”
Oliver tugs on
“Shut up,”
Oliver grins at him in that way that makes
With a slight whisper of wind,
“Let’s see how flexible you are, these days, Mr. Queen.”
There is a flash of white teeth, and then Oliver flips them. “No, I think tonight we should see how flexible you are.”
“Show-off.”
“It’s not bragging if it’s true.”
Oliver looks him up and down, assessing him carefully. “Okay, then. Let’s get bendy!”

Date: 2007-09-17 03:42 am (UTC)and i'm so glad you decided to an epilogue. personally i love lois but i really liked seeing oliver show her up. it seems like something he would do. the bruce/clark interaction was awesome too!
this story completely rocked. i'm pretty sure i asked you before, but i just wanted to let you know i added this to my clark/ollie list. :D let me know if you have an objections.
i hope to see more clark & oliver from you in the future! thanks so much for writing this and sharing it with us.

Date: 2007-09-17 04:27 am (UTC)I do actually like Lois a lot of the time. But she is hard on Clark, and in this fic, I think a lot of her behaviour stems from her guilt about Chloe and the fact that Chloe was Clark's best friend.
I'm glad you liked the Bruce/Clark, too. Bruce just showed up and kept showing up. And now I'm contemplating a sequel that would be Bruce/Clark, but I don't know when I'll write it.
Please do go right ahead and add this fic to your Clark/Ollie list. I never tire of people pimping my work, so I'm very happy if you want to do that. And thank you!
I might have exhausted (temporarily) my Clark/Oliver pool of inspiration, so I'll be taking a break from writing that pairing for a while. But I'll probably write more, maybe after Justin Hartley's return in season 7.

Date: 2007-09-17 04:35 am (UTC)the list is here if you want to take a look: http://svgurl.livejournal.com/5145.html#cutid1
and ollie won't be back until mid season so you'll have a good long break. :D

Date: 2007-09-17 04:43 am (UTC)I have a couple of Bruce/Clark angsty drabbles waiting for posting that might soothe your savage breast, too. LOL

Date: 2007-09-17 04:46 am (UTC)yes, i will be satisfied with the warning and i'll take the drabble too. :) you don't need to but if you're offering, who am i to refuse? ;)
ooh, because of the world's finest community i'm kind of falling in love with bruce/clark . . . i'd definitely be into the drabbles. :D

Date: 2007-09-17 11:05 am (UTC)And don't worry; you didn't really scare me. I know what it's like to be sensitive about an OTP. Mine is Bruce/Dick, which squicks some people, but I cannot read any fic that has the two of them in it without seeing that pairing regardless of whether or not it's supposed to be there.

Date: 2007-09-17 05:24 pm (UTC)and i'm glad to see i'm no the only one who does that. i can't read clex anymore because my twisted, clark/oliver obsessed mind will find a way to add oliver in the story and have him end up with clark. *blushes* LOL. :D

Date: 2007-09-17 04:31 am (UTC)I prefer Bruce/Clark to Clark/Oliver, myself, and I'm actually contemplating a sequel to this fic that would be Bruce/Clark, because Bruce kept creeping into this story and trying to take over. I had to struggle very hard to keep him from muscling Oliver out.

Date: 2007-09-17 11:07 am (UTC)As for the sequel, it's good to know someone would want to read it if/when I write it. Because, you know, Oliver Queen as a character is notoriously promiscuous, and I think even Superman might not be enough for him for too long...
thanks for sticking with the story and commenting; it's greatly appreciated. :D

Date: 2007-09-17 07:26 pm (UTC)I'm very happy and grateful that you still enjoyed this part. This fic pretty much kicked my ass, and for the life of me, I couldn't keep a consistent tone for more than a couple of parts, but I finished it. It's mammoth and was completely unplanned and all over the place, but I finished it and I feel this huge sense of relief and accomplishment.
Of course, part of me is also shouting, "Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, I'm free at last!" LOL

Sir, yes, sir! Now that I've crossed this behemoth off my to-do list, I can step back from Clark/Oliver and slide back into Bruce/Clark. I have a couple of ficlets almost ready--but I've been spamming people's flists, so I have to wait a little bit.

Date: 2007-09-18 03:39 pm (UTC)Everything is NOT as it should be until Clark is with Bruce! LOL Or, at least, that's what my inner fangirl is screaming. :))
I loved the Clark/Ollie here. They have such a wonderful vibe, and seem so into each other, like the five year wait means they now can't get enough of one another. You got that feeling across perfectly.
Of course, I loved the showing up of Lois, particularly because I have the Lois from the show in mind who has always been so dismissive of Clark. The beginning of this had me smiling hugely.
The scene with Bruce was to die for. :) The comment about whips and harnesses was Clark flirting. He just has to admit it. LOL And I *know* Bruce is feeling it. Why else would he be so willing to let Clark know that he's a beautiful billionaire too, with even more...assets...than Ollie? LOL That's exactly what I took out of Bruce's identity reveal. ;) Manipulative bastard. Hee! Ollie better watch out.
Thanks so much for persevering with this, Kay. It sounds like you had to force yourself to finish, which I can really appreciate since it always seems to me that the endings of stories are always the most difficult to write. I do want to say again how marvelous the story is and what a great accomplishment. Kudos!

Date: 2007-09-18 11:46 pm (UTC)This Lois is the one from the show, and she has been too dismissive of Clark; and long before he became the dorky, bumbling reporter, too, which is unforgivable and therefore deserving of this little comeuppance. :)
Thanks for sticking with this story; although I guess you had to because it's for the contest. Speaking of, thank you for extending the deadline a couple of times. At times, the deadline was a driving impetus in getting me to finish this monster, and I'm grateful for that.
no subject
Date: 2007-09-19 12:20 am (UTC)LOL, exactly. Who the hell could look at Clark pre-bumbling and not at least admit that he's gorgeous? She lived in his house. She had to have seen him mostly unclothed a time or two. I'd have more respect for her if she admitted what is so obvious and just said that she wasn't interested. LOL
>>And I do like this epilogue.
I thought the epilogue was very fine. And the Batman/Superman part was important for me because the story had a lot to do with Clark's evolution as a hero; it wasn't just about the romance. Clark giving the means to stop himself to Bruce shows intelligence and responsibility and a willingness to act as a hero, and not just when or how it's convenient. So I took a lot away from the ending, along with my certitude that Clark and Bruce are in love. LOL
>>Thanks for sticking with this story; although I guess you had to because it's for the contest.
Okay, now you're being silly. LOL This story was a pleasure, and it had nothing to do with the contest. ;)

Date: 2007-09-20 12:52 am (UTC)Clark and Bruce little chat went in the right direction, everything was just right and in there place. I loved it and i hope to read more Collie from you.
Rocking end to the story.

Date: 2007-09-20 02:44 am (UTC)I'm taking a bit of a break from writing Clark/Oliver for a while, but if you haven't read it, yet, I do have another Collie series called Revelations that starts with "Denial." (There are 4 stories). I'll probably come back to writing Oliver, maybe after his reappearance in season 7 to give me more inspiration. Or maybe if I break down and buy season 6 in spite of how little I enjoyed it. LOL

Just gotta have faith. XD I really don't want this to fail. lol. It has Eliza and Amy and other people and it should be good, damn it. XD
It's just hard to explain the show and stuff. lol. And don't wanna be too hopeful because it's Fox (where good tv goes to die! Or used to, at least. lol.) and stuff. lol.

Date: 2008-09-27 05:47 pm (UTC)I also love the humour, like how uptight Batman is, how dense AC is (I agree re that actor), and superfast jerking off? lmao!
Excellent work. I'm really glad I found this and spent a very nice Saturday afternoon reading it. :)

Date: 2008-09-27 11:25 pm (UTC)And when the feedback is as complimentary as this one is, it makes my day. I'm thrilled I could give you some substantial Clark/Oliver - I know how frustrating it is to find very little fic about a desired pairing, especially when what there is tends to be flocked - and I'm very happy you enjoyed it.
Thanks so much for telling me! (Oh, and I'm in love with your icon.)

Date: 2009-01-03 03:46 pm (UTC)I look at it like this, seeing as you're so adamant about their being a Bruce/Clark. (In this story, I don't really get that... I get that Clark is intrigued in a nebulous sort of way with the puzzle that is Batman, and Batman is, despite himself, charmed by Clark and as one commenter said, it could be the beginning of that very close canon best friendship.) Anyway... Clark with Ollie is sort of like the first, heady, so deep and full of emotion relationship that you hear about people having during their year or two in France. *LOL* Do you know what I mean? The relationship that devours one but ultimately burns too brightly to last past a certain length of time, but always makes one smile wistfully in reminiscence as the years go on.
I loved it!

Date: 2009-01-05 10:19 pm (UTC)The Bruce/Clark was never intended to be in the fic, but tmelange saw it and then I saw it, and then I got the idea for a sequel and... well, we'll see what happens.
Glad you liked it, though. (And thank you so very much for all your amazing comments. They mean a lot.)

Date: 2009-01-05 10:38 pm (UTC)So it's been quite the joy to spend my mornings with a cup of coffee - or three - and your stories. I love your writer's voice; the way you string the words together, the things you let the words say and the things you let them suggest. I love the way you capture the characters we all know and love so well; keeping them honest and true. And you've made me laugh aloud on many occasions sometimes just from pure delight at what I'm reading.
And I thank you for being instrumental in the return of my own muses. They'd "fucked off to Rio" as we say in rockfic land. For the past couple of years, I'd been unable to write anything about my favorite boys other than drabbles and even those were few and far between. Your Dick, Bruce, Ollie, Clark, Tim et al have convinced my boys to come home. *grin* I'm almost 4000 words into a fic with my OTP and it shows no signs of stopping.
I've added you to my flist (and please, don't worry about having to do the same!) to keep tabs an someone who's become one of my favorite fanfic authors in any fandom.
Thank you for sharing your gift, Kay. :)

Thanks, again.
