Why do I (really rather desperately) want Damian to become Nightwing's sidekick after Bruce returns and Dick goes back to being Nightwing? I've always preferred Nightwing on his own, unless he's with Batman, but there's something so sweet and quite (dare I say it?) healthy about the connection Damian has with Dick. Dick actually likes the little, snotty, arrogant, underneath-it-all-desperate-for-approval kid (and so do I), you can tell Damian is growing fond of Dick, too, in his own way, and I think they're good for each other.
And, no, I can't see Damian staying Robin once Bruce is Batman again. Not only because I can't see Bruce wanting it that way, but because I don't think Damian would, either. Dick, of course, is desperate to go back to being Nightwing, to being himself and not having to pretend to be someone else. (Because although Nightwing is the nighttime vigilante alternate persona, he's still very, very much like Dick Grayson.) And I miss Nightwing quite fiercely. Also, the way the writers are portraying Dick!Batman, they keep showing him screw up, but he's been doing this whole thing for YEARS now. There would be the inevitable adjustment to a different uniform and set of weapons, but it's not like he doesn't know what he's doing. I get the feeling the writers want to emphasize that no one will ever be as good as Bruce Wayne, and that irks me, because while no one will ever REPLACE Bruce, I think Dick is just as good as Bruce is, in entirely different ways.
Um...rant over?
Anyway, I finally read Batman and Son. I'd been resisting it because the whole idea that Batman had a son he didn't know about bothered me; but after I started reading Batman and Robin and kind of loving Damian, I had to see where it all started. Now, Batman and Son is a bit of a mess. Some great moments, but a lot of confusion and a lack of overall consistency. Also, Batman is a little too quippy for my taste (unless he's Dick!Batman, but that comes later); it's like he's channeling Dick, and if that is intentional on the writer's part, for various Bat-issuees, then okay, I like it, but I don't think it is.
The bit with future-Damian!Batman I enjoyed mainly for a few little things that gave me theories, and if they're true, they make me very happy. And possibly give me inspiration. Although the bald head shocked me, I must admit.
