The first time he sees Dick again, Bruce can’t breathe for thirty-eight seconds. He can’t speak for twenty-three more, but it takes only the space between two heartbeats to start to reach out and then stop.

 

Dick doesn’t come closer, and Bruce mourns the young boy who was so free with his embraces. It’s been too long since he’s touched Dick, and longer still since he’s wanted to do more than just touch. Bruce wants to hold, to have, and fourteen seconds after he says, “Dick,” he finds himself kissing Dick the way he’s told himself he can never do.
